Senior Psychosocial Safety Advisor
Turn psychosocial risk insights into practical action through leader coaching, facilitation and national impact.
- Flexible three to five-day week, with location options across Australia
- Established survey results and tools ready for you to turn into practical action
- Coach senior leaders and facilitate meaningful psychosocial risk conversations
This is a highly practical role for a psychologist with strong psychosocial risk, facilitation and coaching capability. You will help leaders understand existing psychosocial risk assessment findings, engage their teams and translate the insights into targeted, achievable actions.
The assessment work has already been completed. Comprehensive reports, a reporting dashboard, leadership guidance and supporting frameworks are in place. Your focus will be on helping the organisation act on the findings.
This is not a policy-writing or procedure-heavy position. It will suit someone who enjoys working directly with people, facilitating conversations, coaching leaders and creating meaningful organisational change.
The organisation employs approximately 1,700 people across Australia and operates within a complex, highly regulated environment.
Its national Health, Safety and Wellbeing team supports employees and operational functions across every state. The team is geographically dispersed, and most meetings and stakeholder engagement are conducted online.
The latest psychosocial risk assessment identified increased exposure across the organisation, influenced by organisational change, new leadership, system changes, workload and administrative burden. Some operational areas also face risks associated with difficult interactions and vicarious trauma.
Working with the National Manager, Health, Safety and Wellbeing, you will:
- Help senior leaders interpret psychosocial risk assessment results relevant to their functions
- Coach leaders on how to communicate findings and consult effectively with their teams
- Facilitate workshops, focus groups and deeper discussions in priority or higher-risk areas
- Help leaders distinguish underlying psychosocial hazards from symptoms and general wellbeing concerns
- Guide teams in identifying practical, proportionate and sustainable controls
- Support approximately 30 leaders across multiple directorates and functions
- Assist selected functions to document psychosocial risk and control plans
- Help integrate psychosocial risk priorities into broader corporate planning activities
- Contribute insights and resources to developing leadership capability programs
- Work collaboratively with the existing Health, Safety and Wellbeing team and specialist consulting partners
- Ensure sensitive discussions are managed safely, professionally and with appropriate judgement
What success will look like by the end of the assignment:
- Leaders understand their psychosocial risk results and what they mean for their teams
- Priority functions have undertaken meaningful consultation and deeper exploration where required
- Leaders are more confident discussing psychosocial hazards with employees
- Practical actions addressing workload, administrative burden and other key risks have been identified
- Higher-risk or outlier functions have documented appropriate risk and control plans
- Psychosocial risk considerations are better integrated into organisational and leadership planning
- The internal team has stronger tools, resources and capability to continue the work
Essential requirements include:
- A recognised tertiary qualification in psychology
- Practical experience in psychosocial risk, psychological health and safety or workplace mental health
- Strong facilitation skills across workshops, focus groups and sensitive team discussions
- Demonstrated experience coaching and advising leaders
- The ability to translate survey findings and qualitative information into practical organisational action
- Sound understanding of psychosocial hazards, risk assessment and effective controls
- Strong interpersonal skills, judgement and professional discretion
- The ability to establish trust and influence without taking ownership away from leaders
- Confidence working independently across a geographically dispersed organisation
Experience within government, regulation, healthcare, emergency services, professional services or another complex national organisation would be highly regarded. Experience with psychosocial risk assessment platforms would be beneficial but is not essential.
